Trainee Preacher

The role is expository preaching once or twice a month with weekly 1-1 feedback and help; and also pastoral, evangelistic and relational 1-1 ministry, especially with newcomers. Small group work could be with 20s & 30s, ARU undergraduates, 11-18s, internationals or preschool families, depending on experience & gifts.

St Matthew’s is a warm church family of about 200 with a good spread of ages and stages. We’re led by a conservative evangelical team under the oversight of a complementarian Bishop.  Our vicar, Frank Price, led a “church graft” from St Andrew the Great and our associate vicar is leading a similar project to Peterborough. We have a children/women’s worker, a youth worker and administrator.

We’re seeking:

  • a whole-hearted follower of Jesus;
  • about 2-6 years’ experience (eg as church apprentice, intern, youth or student worker);
  • evidence of faithful, engaging, expository Bible preaching;
  • gifted at making connections and building friendships with new people quickly;
  • available to start 1st September 2026 and likely to stay for at least 3 years, God willing;
  • sharing our commitment to safeguarding the welfare of young or vulnerable people;
  • good references and background checks, eligible to work in the UK.

We’re offering:

  • pay matching unqualified teachers (£25k-£35k, depending on experience/training);
  • housing next to church building (30% deducted from pay, not suitable for large family);
  • pension, house-moving and training course fees and expenses;
  • staff team with daily and weekly meetings for support and training.
